See Dick Testify; Citi and Wells Fargo Take A Time Out

See Dick Testify Citi and Wells Fargo Take A Time OutSee Dick Testify Citi and Wells Fargo Take A Time OutLike a married man being interrogated by his wife for an alleged extramarital affair, Lehman Brothers CEO Dick Fuld sat in front of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform today, answering questionsconcerning his inolvement in the bankruptcy of his 158-year old, now dead firm. For nearly two hours Fuld deflected accusations that he misled investors and profited at the expense of shareholders, holding firmly to the advice given to me by a college roommate with questionable ethics on what to do if a significant other ever accuses you of cheating Deny Till You Die.It was clear that the members of Congress posing question after question, at times trying very hard totrip up the CEO, werent buyingDicks innocence. At one point, Henry Waxman, chairman of the committee, said to Fuld, I dont accept the fact that you assert the system worked when you lost your stock. And in c losing,he added, You dont seem to acknowledge that you did anything wrong. One thing seems to be certain whether or not Fuld will be held accountable will not bring back the lost severance of numerous Lehman employees whose units fell under the bankruptcy, or the value of the shares held by Lehmans investors. While Fuld was testifying, the stock market was imploding on news that overseas governments had been forced to jump into the bailout game, but thanks to a late rally the Dow only finished down 3.8 percent. And just after the market closed, more news surfaced about the battle over Wachovia, as Citi and Wells Fargo agreed to take a time out of sorts allparties involved have temporarily suspended their fight in court in what seems to be a way to allowan agreement to be made without the law involved (earlier today Citi filed a $60 billion lawsuit against Wells Fargo, claiming thatit had shaken on a deal with the Charlotte-based bank before Wells made its offer). So, it appears that Cit i could get Wachovias consumer banking geschftliches miteinander after all, with the rest of Wachoviagoing to Wells Fargo. 4 Traps People Fall Into When Theyre Promoted - The Muse

4 Traps People Fall Into When They’re Promoted - The Muse 4 Traps People Fall Into When They’re Promoted If you’ve just been promoted- well done! You get to gather your friends and pop the cork on that champagne bottle you’ve been saving. However, as you know, it’s not all a cake walk when you move up. If you want to excel in this new role, be careful not to fall into one of these four predictable post-promotion traps: 1. “I Don’t Need to Do Any of the Work I Used To” Unfortunately, not everything changes overnight, and it may take a while before you’ll see a measurable difference in the work you’re given, or even the time you have to take on new tasks. Keep in mind there may be a domino effect with projects nearing completion and new clients coming on, and that when they’re finished you’ll be looped in. Until then, you may just have to continue your work as you did before your promotion. In the meantime, there are a couple things you can do to get a head start in your new role. For example, you can take someone you admire or someone in a similar position as yours to coffee and ask them how they’ve dealt with this kind of transition in their career. Or, you can look into the training options your company provides and see what’s available to you. Or, you can check out these classes for new managers who feel a little lost. 2. “I’m the Most Important Member of This Team/Company” Uh-oh. Arrogance has overtaken you, and suddenly you’re the best thing to ever happen to your company, expecting applause for all your big ideas and subordinates to jump out of the way when you walk down the hall. This kind of attitude is only going to make people resent you- and your direct reports not want to do what you ask. Instead, stay humble and curious, and focus on how you can succeed as a team, rather than on your own. This will ultimately make you look good and your team more productive. 3. “I Can’t Believe All the Recruiter Calls I’m Suddenly Getting- This Is Fun!” It’s typical to have recruiters flocking your doorstep (or, rather, your LinkedIn) once you change your status. It can be flattering, but be careful. The very people who supported your promotion, or even fought for it, expect more focus and energy from you now, not less.  Sneaking out to take a call from a headhunter can be a time waster and an energy drain- plus, if you get caught, you’re risking losing the credibility you worked so hard for. For at least six months, stay focused solely on your new role and confirm for your boss that they made the right decision by supporting your upward mobility. If you find down the road it’s not a great fit after all, then it’s OK to start the search. 4. “Spending Spree!” Many promotions come with a salary increase or bonus. If that’s the case for you, go ahead and reward yourself with a little treat- a new pair of running shoes, a donation to your favorite charity, or that beach vacation you’ve been dreaming about. Then, be the responsible adult I know you are (and want to be) and make sure some of that extra cash is going toward an emergency fund or your 401K. No matter what your level or income, the earlier you start to save for later on in life, the better (here’s why). Besides, you won’t really “miss” money you weren’t getting until recently, and you can pat yourself on the back later on when you see just how much you have saved up. It’s OK to do a happy dance and celebrate your new promotion. But then, remind yourself to have a little patience, to stay focused and humble, and to be wise with your new responsibility (and salary).   You’ve got this! After all, you’re at a whole new level now.

After getting 1.4 million views on LinkedIn, this college grad is still looking for a job

After getting 1.4 million views on LinkedIn, this college grad is still looking for a job After getting 1.4 million views on LinkedIn, this college grad is still looking for a job Back in April,  Zach Bragg  posted his resume on LinkedIn hoping to get exposure and land a job in sports media. The graduating senior’s post went viral, getting over 1,280 shares, 8,000 comments, and 1.4 million views.Despite all that buzz, Zach ended up having: Approximately 40 phone calls with recruiters (0.5% of total comments and 0.002% of total views) 15 in-person interviews from the calls 3 companies that he’s still speaking with and excited about It’s great that Zach has several options, and I’ve got my fingers crossed that one of those final interviews leads to a job.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! But the real story here is that after all of the attention Zach’s post received, he’s still dealing with a lengthy and draining job hunt.In fact, Zach told me he got so many irrelevant messages that he eventually had to stop responding. He was overwhelmed by it all. And because he had no way of organizing and sorting all the comments and messages, he actually began to worry that he was missing out on relevant opportunities buried under the irrelevant volume.Zach’s experience is all too common, and it’s the result of a broken system that favors volume over relevancy. Candidates find themselves applying to hundreds of  job postings, and recruiters find themselves reviewing hundreds of irrelevant resumes. Both p arties feel like they’re looking for a needle in a haystack due to the volume problem within the recruitment process. That problem can be traced to two factors:  resumes and job descriptions. Neither tool helps candidates find the jobs they want, and in the end, they cause headaches for both sides.Despite all the time and effort candidates expend, the job hunt is often long, frustrating, and demoralizing. Here’s why the search is such a struggle- and what needs to change for it to improve:People tend to believe that if they submit their resumes to enough jobs, they’re going to get one.Just look at Zach- over 1.4 million people saw his resume, and he ended up with 40 phone calls. Less than half of those were relevant enough to merit a follow-up interview. That means he converted roughly 0.001% of those views into in-person interviews.  At some level, most candidates understand they’re facing an uphill battle. According to Jobvite’s  Recruiting Benchmark Report, only one in ei ght candidates who applied for a job in 2017 got an interview. Still, getting an interview doesn’t mean you’ll get the position. The conversion rate from interview to hire was just 28% in 2017.With stats that low, it makes sense that candidates submit their resumes to as many jobs as possible.Unfortunately, all candidates have to rely on when applying is the job description. The problem is that these descriptions aren’t great at explaining the actual opportunity. This was part of the reason why Zach’s 40 calls only led to 15 interviews. After talking on the phone with many of the people who had reached out to him, he realized that the opportunities didn’t really match the job description he had read.Aside from his crazy high exposure, Zach’s experience isn’t uncommon. Most people wind up applying to any job that  sounds good  rather than the jobs that will  actually be good  for them.  That approach seems reasonable, but it actually fuels the disconnect between candidat es and companies. Because as the volume of applications rises, it becomes more and more difficult for recruiters to figure out who really is the best fit for the job.Companies have resumes flooding in, but it’s an overwhelming and inefficient process.Recruiters also have a problem with volume. A typical recruiter will get an average of 250 submissions per job opening. Realistically, one person can’t sort through 250 resumes and pick out the candidates who will be a perfect fit for the role.Even when they do attempt to look at each resume, recruiters spend  an average of six seconds  on each one. Six seconds to decide whether an applicant makes the cut. Most companies try to handle the high volume of applications using technology. But the tools they use- like keyword matching- are bad tech using bad data.Instead of finding the candidates who would actually thrive in the role, they’re limited to the candidates who tweaked their resumes in just the right way.Resumes are supposedly a way for candidates to showcase their skills and abilities. But by now, practically everyone is aware that a resume needs to be “optimized” for keywords to make it past the filters that companies use. Instead of displaying working behaviors, most resumes just show off a few critical keywords. The end result is this: candidates and companies are using bad data to evaluate each other- and neither truly understands the strengths or benefits of the other. The recruitment process needs new tech to bridge the gap between candidates and roles.Candidates are putting themselves out there. Companies are putting out job openings. Yet the job hunt is still a struggle because the recruitment industry is using tools that promote quantity over quality, volume over relevancy. To help both candidates and companies, we need technology that doesn’t rely on job descriptions or resumes. A resume isn’t a good way of articulating someone’s strengths and skillset. It doesn’t advocate for someone ’s interests or working behaviors. It doesn’t help a company understand where a candidate will do their best work.We need a tool that can get right to the source of someone’s true working behavior. At  Edvo, we don’t use resumes. Instead, we identify a candidate’s working behaviors and role-specific skills by asking relevant behavioral questions. By leveraging technology, we’re able to take unstructured data from free response answers to these questions and structure it to create accurate representations of candidates’ working interests and value. This approach allows us to help candidates find roles at companies they actually want to work for and will thrive within. At the same time, we provide companies insight into how well the candidate’s true skills and working behaviors fit the open role. The vast majority of candidates won’t get anywhere near 1.4 million views on their resume. But the truth is, the number of people looking at a resume doesn’t really matter wh en those views don’t lead to relevant opportunities. Fortunately, with the right  technology, we can effectively identify a candidate’s value and fit in relation to a specific job opening, creating a win-win for both people and companies. This article first appeared on Minutes.

How to maintain work friendships after you leave the job

How to maintain work friendships after you leave the job How to maintain work friendships after you leave the job When you leave a job, you walk away with a lot of things - valuable experience, industry connections, a little pep in your step if you didn’t love your job. But one thing you can’t take with you to your next job? All those work friendships you made. Your office pals got you through the late nights, the tense meetings, and commiserated with you at more happy hours than you can count. Just because you’re leaving a job doesn’t mean you have to leave the friendships you made at work behind too. Continuing those friendships, even though you are no longer a cubicle away, is easier than you think.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  Make the effortWhen you leave a job it can be a whirlwind. All that celebrating combined with the hustle and bustle of adjusting to a new routine can make the time fly by. Now that you can’t catch up on your lunch breaks, it will be a lot more work to make friendships with former colleagues thrive. If you’re committed to maintaining the friendships, you’ll need to make an effort to plan outings. Call them to check in and be reliable when they make plans with you. These are solid friendship rules in general - especially when you’re looking to take a relationship from one of convenience (which let’s face it, many workplace friendships are) to a real friendship.Keep it positiveIf you left a job on bad terms or were eager to leave, you may find you harbor some bad feelings toward a former employer. Maybe when you worked together, you and your work bestie bonded over your frustrations. While spending time with friends from a former job, try not to be negative about the company they still work at. Yes, you can commiserate when they vent. (You can relate and empathize in a way their non-work friends can’t, after all.) But one way to rub people the wrong way is to talk about how fabulous your new job is, and then remin d them of all the faults of their current job. It’s inconsiderate and an unsustainable way to grow a relationship.Find new common groundGood or bad, you can’t sustain a friendship off of only what you  used  to have in common. You connected with specific colleagues because you had more in common than your jobs. Find whatever those things are and focus on them instead of only the fact that you used to work together. This is an especially good rule of thumb if you’re the one who was left behind at a job. Your friend who left the company you both worked at will want to hear about your big projects at work, or the latest gossip about a steamy office romance. But chances are, they don’t want to hear every minute detail of the presentation you’re working on or the conflicts you’re having - even if they did in the past. They chose to move forward and their interest in a friendship lies in you, not where you work.Incorporate them into your lifeGenerally, your work life and your personal life are very separate, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find joy and friendships in both areas of your life - it does mean that your work friends may not be included in your personal time. That’s OK! You can spend an hour a day with a work friend at lunch alone and not feel the need to get together for brunch on Sundays. But once you no longer work together, your only option to spend time together is outside of work. Make your friends feel incorporated into the rest of your life - invite them over for dinner, introduce them to your other friends, or find a hobby you can enjoy together.Move forwardThe friendships you make at work are bound to change when you or a friend moves onto a new job, and it can feel like a harsh transition. You go from chatting during breaks, power walking at lunch, and carpooling to well, nothing - all in the course of two short weeks. The occasional happy hour may make you feel like you’re spending minimal time together in comparison to how close you were before. Don’t stress, it’s beyond normal to scale way back on how much you see or talk to a former work friend. Even if you are both committed to continuing the friendship outside of work, it will take time to fall into a new rhythm. Being supportive of their career and life, making an effort to spend time together, and being honest about your friendship goals can all lead to a long-lasting relationship that will surpass any job. This article originally appeared on The Everygirl. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

6 Job Search Habits to Keep Productivity Up

6 Job Search Habits to Keep Productivity Up 6 Job Search Habits to Keep Productivity Up Maintaining productivity increases the chances of discovering your perfect job. But sustaining focus and motivation can be challenging, especially during a long hunt. Make your hours count and keep productivity up by incorporating these six job search habits into your daily routine. Heres are job search habits to  keep productivity up when you arent feeling motivated: 1. Create a plan. Want to make tomorrow great? Formulate your course of action before you stop working today. “How you prepare for your day the day before will have the biggest impact on your daily production,” says Mitzi Weinman, author of Its About Time! Transforming Chaos into Calm, A to Z.  â€œBecause you just ‘lived’ your day, it’s still fresh in your head. If you wait and plan in the morning, there’s a better chance that distractions will end up preventing you to plan, and you’ll be in reactive mode throughout the day. Also, moving undone tasks forward in the calendar means that you are taking control of your tasks and don’t feel like you’re always behind- no need to look backwards to see what you haven’t done.” Looking for a job? These 25 have the highest growth potential in 2016! 2. Start big. Ranking activities in terms of importance can help ensure that the most promising or pressing things receive due attention. Weinman suggests tackling these tasks first each day. You’ll get a mood-boosting feeling of accomplishment and reduce stress when that important custom cover letter is complete rather than hanging over your head all day. 3. Limit interruptions. While it may not seem like a big deal if your child comes by to ask for a snack or your spouse decides now would be a great time to discuss paint colors for the bedroom, being pulled away even for a moment disturbs focus. You’ll waste time trying to get back in the zone and increase the odds of making errors. Deal with issues before you start to work, and let others know the “do not disturb” sign on your closed door needs to be respected. However, it isn’t only other people who lure your attention elsewhere. Self-interruption can be a huge distraction. Since we often worry that we’ll forget something if we don’t act on the thought immediately, keep a notebook next to your work area. Quickly jot down whatever pops into your mind- returning your sister’s phone call, searching for a missing library book, making a weekly menu. Then, pick a time later to deal with this list and assign each item a place in your master schedule. 4. Control social media usage. Facebook, Twitter, and the like rank among the top modern-day time zappers. But since these things also have a role in job searches, people often consider time spent on them justified. Instead of giving yourself free reign, be strategic. Close anything you’re not using to avoid the “I’ll just look for a second” temptation. Block out time to complete specific activities on LinkedIn, which tends to be the most useful professional platform. Save the primarily personal-use sites until the end of the day when other tasks have been accomplished and “wandering” won’t be so disruptive. 5. Schedule in breaks. Lunch is a necessity, not a luxury (and eating at your desk doesn’t count). People need time to relax and recharge. Looking forward to a planned break can make work hours pass more pleasantly. Even if you fill the time with a “practical” activity such as unloading the dishwasher, moving around and thinking about something else besides job hunting for a bit can revitalize your efforts when it’s time to return. 6. Surround yourself with positivity. Finally, don’t underestimate the energy required for a successful job search. Fill your life with people and activities that keep your spirits up. Make time to exercise. Create a dream board. Hang out with friends who offer hope and reminders of your great attributes. Feeling confident can boost productivity because you’ll be excited to show others what you have to offer! Readers, what job search habits do you employ to keep productivity up in your job search? 5 unexpected blocks to creativity that are in your way

5 unexpected blocks to creativity that are in your way 5 unexpected blocks to creativity that are in your way If you are ever faced with the feeling that all your creative juices have dried up, there is one question and one question only you need to ask yourself:Who are you studying?I am such a believer of input and its role in staying creative over long periods of time.Do you know why you feel so inspired after seeing live music?Or going to the theater?Or watching a really great movie? It’s because you are allowing yourself to “take in,” instead of being in output mode. And if you stay in output mode too long, that’s when the infamous “writer’s block” appears.1. You aren’t making time for inputLike I said above, if you aren’t constantly studying your craft and learning from others, where on earth do you think all your brilliance is going to come from?Your desk?In your empty apartment? You have to, have to, have to make time to not only study the work of others, but also to take a break from focusing on “output.”It’s just like going to the gym. You can’t lift weights f or 10 hours straight without eating. In fact, eating is the most important part!2. You aren’t sleepingTrust me, I know that sometimes sleep deprivation can lead to some pretty incredible “a-ha” moments - like a vision quest in the desert, or something - but 99.8 percent of the time, sleep is your best friend. And more than that, it’s not just about sleep, but allowing your brain a chance to rest. Again, this goes back to always being in output mode. You have to allow your engine a chance to cool down.3. You aren’t surrounded by creative peopleYou are the product of the environment that surrounds you.You are influenced by those around you.You are inspired by those around you.You learn from those around you.Environment plays such a monumental role in our development as human beings. If you want to be truly creative, you need to be surrounded by others who are also creative in their own ways, and will push you outside your conventional patterns of thought.4. You aren’t master ing your emotions - your emotions are mastering you.At first, I was going to say, “You are not in a positive place emotionally,” but some of the world’s greatest art has come from tragedy and heartbreak.I think a more true statement, when it comes to creativity, is to be aware of how you feel and to use that as inspiration. It is one thing to be depressed. It is entirely another to know you are depressed, witness that emotion, and then transmute it into something incredible. That is, and should always be, the goal.5. You aren’t practicing. And finally, the simplest but most easily forgotten habit of all, the importance of practice. You might be naturally creative, but if you aren’t actively practicing, that muscle will become weak. Oddly enough, you will still hold yourself to the same standard you once performed at, but will not be able to replicate the same success because you aren’t practicing.Creativity is a skill. It must be practiced, diligently and with focus, in order to be honed and cultivated. This article originally appeared on Inc Magazine
